James Mursell

James Mursell has been making Windsor chairs full time for the past 11 years from his farm in West Sussex. He uses locally sourced woods and uses green woodworking techniques to make the finest possible chairs which he makes to commission. He is a member of the Sussex Guild and exhibits regularly at their shows around the county. In 2004 he set up The Windsor Workshop to teach students to make Windsor chairs on 5-day courses and runs 15 - 20 courses per year. He also teaches regularly at West Dean College near Chichester. He has developed a range of specialist chairmaking tools, including spokeshaves and travishers, which he sells to makers all over the world. In 2010 he wrote "Windsor Chairmaking" - a comprehensive guide to the making of these chairs including discussion of their history and design.
